In 1854, immigrants known as the Wends left Hamburg, Germany, and sought out a new life of religious freedom and cheap, fertile land in central Texas. As one of the famous Painted Churches, St. Paul Lutheran was built by these Germans in 1870 and still stands today as one of the few two-level churches. It has the highest pulpit in Texas, seen here directly across from the image's point of view. Up until the 1940s, men would sit in the balcony, while women would sit in the lower level. Today, folks may sit where they want. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
