Winding along the Animas River valley an over towering cliffs for ~ 52 miles, the Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad allows visitors to take in the beautiful San Juan Mountains and Rocky Mountain landscape from a unique perspective. The railroad construction began in 1881 and, amazingly, finished only 9 months later. The tracks were originally made to carry gold and silver from the mountains to the main rail lines. In current ties, it carries passengers and tourists through the breathtaking mountains. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
