Oslo is the largest city in Norway as well as the capitol. It is a beautiful city, and parks seem to be around every corner. The city was first founded in 1040 at the end of the Viking age. Called Ánslo, it was destroyed in 1624 by fire, then rebuilt and named Kristiania in honor of King Christian IV. It served as the capital of Norway from 1814-1905. Kristiania was renamed 'Oslo' in 1925 and today serves as the center for economic and government affairs, as well as serving as a hub for maritime trading and shipping.
Today, Oslo is surrounded by mountains, giving it the feel of an amphitheater. One of its most famous sites is the Oslo Opera House, home to the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. The architecture in this building, completed in 2007, is very unique. Much of the building is made of white granite and La Facciata, a white Italian carrara marble, while 49' tall glass windows surround the lobby, allowing for amazing views of the waters of Oslofjord.
I've been to Oslo on two separate occasions and loved my time in this clean and expensive city. This capitol of Norway does have wet summer and fall seasons, and it shared its rain with me on my travels. I look forward to going back an experiencing sunny skies, as well!
