North Iceland feels a little more remote and wild. Fewer tourist buses make it this far, and life seems to move a bit slower. This area includes port cities surrounding by snow-capped mountains and thermal areas of not-so-ancient lava and steam. A few notable places include:

*Husavik - my favorite area in the north of Iceland. As an old whaling port, it is a great place for photography. This village has a nice harbor, colorful architecture, a few good bakeries, and miles of lupine spreading down the slopes outside of town.
* Dettifoss and Selfoss - waterfalls frequently visited in Vatnajokull National Park.
* Aldeyjarfoss - south of Iceland's second largest town of Akureyri, Aldeyjarfoss is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. It stays relatively hidden well off the beaten path. This gem is found an hour’s drive south (down a decent dirt road) from the more touristy...
* Godafoss - a pretty waterfall on the main stop on the tour bus routes.
* Mývatn and Krafla - offer surreal hikes through these steaming thermal areas.
