Nestled in the San Juan Mountains, Lake City, Colorado, offers beautiful trails to hike, rivers to fish, and lakes to enjoy. The sleepy town is named after Lake Cristobal and rests at the convergence of the headwaters of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River and Hensen Creek. Lake City boasts several 14ers, including the tallest in the area, Uncompahgre Peak (14,309'). Other prominent 14ers are Handies Peak (14,048), Redcloud Peak (14,034') and Sunshine Peak (14,001').
While around 400 people call Lake City Home today, more than 3,000 prospectors moved here in search of rich mineral deposits in the mid 1870s, shortly after the town became incorporated in 1873.
Today, Lake City is known mostly as a picturesque town to visit and promotes tourism. Nearby North Clear Creek Falls flows about 20 miles to the south and is worth exploring, as well. In the summers, wildflowers, including the state flower, the Columbine, bloom in the lush valleys and meadows, especially the famous American Basin, that surround this quaint town.
