Houston in Black and White
Last week I was in Houston and took the opportunity to photograph a little of the Houston skyline one cold evening. I don’t seek out locations much in the winter months because the grass is usually brown and the trees bare. Still, sometimes these scenes can be taken in black and white and look quite striking, especially if the clouds cooperate.
First, I have to pause and say Houston traffic is pretty terrible. My friends that live there say they avoid the downtown area and stick to their neighborhoods north and west of the mayhem. For someone used to driving on country roads where the biggest traffic boondoggle is the carpool line at the local elementary and middle schools, city traffic is not my jam.
Nevertheless, being in Houston, I wanted to take advantage of the situation, so I headed downtown to Eleanor Tinsley Park along Buffalo Bayou. After walking a ways and looking around for a good location, I finally settled on an area around the Carruth Pedestrian Bridge. I love the way the bridge crosses the water, and on this evening the water was perfectly calm. Adding to the overall scene, the setting sun in the west turned the clouds in the east nice shades of pink and blue. In the distance, the downtown Houston skyscrapers seemed to climb into the clouds.

A full moon rises over the downtown high rises of Houston, Texas, on a beautiful spring night. The buldings were glowing with lights and made for a perfect nighttime black and white photograph of the Lone Star State's largest city.
