Bruges, Belgium Images

Bruges, Belgium, is one of those magical places that lingers in my dreams. I've had the good fortune to visit this historic city (the city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site) several times over the last twenty years. While the impact of tourism in pronounced, there are still moments in the morning or evening where you can find yourself wandering alone through cobbled streets that people walked a thousand years ago. Ancient remains, though unrelated to the medieval settlements, date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.

These days, tourism is the main industry. Personally, I enjoy awakening early - before sunrise - and walking along the canals and enjoying the architecture and old bridges that make up this aptly nicknamed, "Venice of the North." Rozenhoedkaai Canal is the most popular and most photographed in Bruges, but other canals await just blocks away that are worthy of exploring.

In this gallery, I hope you will enjoy my work from my mornings and evenings exploring this amazing Flemish city.

* As a side note, you'll see Bruges spelled in several variations. Bruges is the American spelling; Brügge - German; Brugges - French; Brugge - Dutch.
