Thank you for visiting this gallery featuring photographs from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. My visits to this modest national park leave me in awe at the forces of nature and the slow crawl of time.

I've found this area challenging in terms of capturing the scale and color of the area. Some areas of the canyon only receive 33 minutes of sunlight per day, making for some not-so-well-lit crevices. The national park covers 12 miles of the 48 mile gorge. Cut by the Gunnison River, the canyon and rock are nearly 2 billion years old. Made of Precambrian gneiss and schist, the cliffs are the tallest in Colorado at 2,250'. As the Gunnison River travels west, the river cascades downward at a rate of 34 feet per mile.
