Just a few miles west of the downtown area is one of Austin\'s most well known icons, the 360 Bridge. Also known as Pennybacker Bridge after Percy Pennybacker, a designer of bridges for the Texas Highway Department, this Lake Austin crossing was constructed from 600 tons of steel and is built so that no part of the bridge touches the water below. Beneath the bridge is a waterway that locals enjoy. Whether fishing, wake boarding, jet skiing, or water skiing, this area is an Austin favorite. While called Lake Austin, the water beneath the the 360 Bridge is actually part of the Colorado River that eventually flows into Lady Bird Lake.
